Marga
Douma-Alta

Marga studied at the Nel Roos Academy of Ballet, in both the Classical Ballet department as well as the Teacher department, where she specialized in jazz dance. After completing her education in 1987, she danced at Jazz Extension Dance Theater working amongst others with choreographers Fred Benjamin, Ralph Paul Haze and Henny Kamerman.

She participated in Masterclasses jazz dance & choreography in Paris at Rick Odums, Matt Mattox, Geraldine Armstrong and Donald McKayle. She also followed lessons in New York at Broadway Dance Centre, Steps on Broadway and The Alvin Ailey School.

She conducted research on the history of jazz dance in the Netherlands, which resulted in the publication of the book Jazzdance.nl at publisher the Walburg Pers in 2006.

After that she worked as jazz dance historian, choreographer and jazz teacher in the UK, France, USA and at the universities of the arts of Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen in China. In 2012, Marga achieved the Master of Education in Arts degree at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. She had a private ballet school for ten years and was subsequently functioning as artistic leader of the dance department at the ROC of Amsterdam for nine years.

Marga observes, detects, listens and improvises. These properties form the basis of her jazz dance choreographies. Ever on the move, looking for intriguing combinations of jazz music and dance, she focuses on creating cinematic dance experiments with a social reflection on jazz music.

Now she is project leader of EHOD where she teaches the following units:

  • Category Level
